My editors always anticipate my griping about preamp reviewing. A few emails back and forth, and before I knew it, an Elector showed up on my doorstep. Marc was kind enough to put me in touch with the kind and helpful Wendy Knowles of the Focal Naim America Group, which handles North American distribution of SPL products. I like using my own DACs, and I’m a few shekels short of a bushel, so I figured the Elector would do me quite well, thank you very much. 2, which includes an on-board high-resolution DAC along with a few extra signal routing options. For a few more shekels, one could also consider the more sophisticated Director Mk. I chose the Elector, which is a traditional analog-only preamp. Ooohhh yeah!įor those potentially in the market for a preamp-like device from SPL, there are actually a couple of options. Panel, but the likeness was almost uncanny. That looked dangerously like the Phonitor (as I recall it). I went to their website, and lo and behold! There was a preamplifier I hadn’t checked in recently on what has been going on at SPL (my bad…), but I heard some rumblings a little while back from our own Marc Phillips about an audiophile line of componentsĬoming out of the company. Well, here we are, and I’m definitely in! When that happened, I told myself I’d be in. Maybe, just maybe, down the road they’d come out with an audiophile friendly preamplifier that sported much of what I found cool about the Phonitor. When I finally (reluctantly) packaged up the Phonitor and sent it home, I vowed to keep an eye on this little German company called SPL. I thought it made a difference, but maybe I was just wowed by the Phonitor’s overall Chad-like persona. This feature was supposed to improve overall dynamics and resolution by enhancing the power available to downstream modules in the device. Besides that, the amplifier was based on customized discrete amplification modules that ran on beefed-up power supply rails. The Phonitor also had a really cool feature set, including phasey sorts of controls that allowed the listener to make the between-the-ears image blossom out and seem more realistic. However, the Phonitor felt to me like something of a crossover product that might have appeal to both audio professionals and home audio enthusiasts alike. The company, based in Germany, catered almost exclusively to the pro audio side. If I could have justified the purchase though, that Phonitor would have been mine… bahahahaha! Words and photos by John Richardsonīack in those days, SPL (short for Sound Performance Labs) wasn’t exactly a household name in the audiophile community. The problem was that I wasn’t really a dedicated headphone guy, a fact that remains true to this day. Though I didn’t purchase it, I can say that I dearly loved the Phonitor. This is when it’s good to be a reviewer: I found out who distributed the item, I reached out, and lo and behold, I had it! The piece in question? The original version of the SPL Phonitor (cool badass name too…). When I saw a picture of it, I knew I had to get hold of one. What I do know is that the amp was quite badass. Or was it referenced in an off-hand comment somewhere, and I happened to follow up? I really don’t know. I don’t recall exactly how I found out about it maybe through an on-line audio forum, or perhaps in an advertisement. A number of years ago, long before I reviewed this SPL Elector, I stumbled upon a really neat headphone amplifier. ![]() 8/27/2023 0 Comments Hesperides poetry collection![]() ![]() Large themes and the more trivial mingle in the last six lines: that resonant proclamation “I sing of time’s trans-shifting” may encode the major historical changes in England at the period, and the effects they had on Herrick personally but, perhaps wisely, they’re not spelled out, and charming if sentimental legends about roses and lilies replace them. But, in the Argument itself, no one overtly weeps, and if a voyage is distantly conjured, it brings a cargo of exotic luxuries such as spices and ambergris. There are frequent tears in the collection, and, in the poem called His Sailing from Julia, death is imagined as a lonely, uncertain sea voyage. ![]() It fills primroses and resembles tears, and it adorns Julia’s hair with glittering radiance. Dew, a seemingly trivial phenomenon, appears in a number of poems. That engaging oxymoron, “cleanly wantonness”, fluently carries us to a new place among the evocative, somewhat erotic moisturisers of lines seven and eight. Perhaps it also denotes the respectability of translation and imitation, activities allowing Herrick access to the classical poets as his permissive muses. The Poetry Foundation essayist points out the shift from “I sing” to “I write” in line five, suggesting that it “may hint at the hundreds of epigrams on amatory themes and the other subjects that are scattered throughout Hesperides”. So to love and that “cleanly wantonness” that might be considered his speciality. Similarly, it’s possible that the reference to “rains” indicates a kingly pun, which isn’t to say Herrick disdains the primary meaning of flower-friendly cloudbursts. “To the King, Upon his Coming with his Army to the West” imagines “the west” transformed from drooping widowhood so that she “looks like a bride now, or a bed of flowers / newly refreshed both by the sun and showers”. For instance, there’s a metaphorical bride later in the collection. And yet Herrick is not always the delightfully simple literalist he first seems. There’s the sense of an almost boyish appetite when the bridal cakes appear in the next line: the term offers a handy rhyme, of course, but it’s the sort of detail that brings a poem sharply alive. ![]() My Everyman selection by Douglas Brooks-Davies (also the source of the current text) notes that a wake can also be a fair. “Wakes” are not necessarily funereal vigils, but can be held for various celebratory purposes, such as the dedication of a church. “Hock-carts” are the decorated carts that bring home the harvest, “wassails” the toasts especially associated with Christmas and the new year. Then he moves us on to the larger celebrations in the rural and Christian year. It’s a playful, pretty string of nouns, and might seem somewhat random, so in the second line Herrick begins to build his calendar and show his pastoral credentials, separating the seasons and specifying July flowers as if to notice the different flora produced by the changing months. The alliteration fairly bubbles along in the opening line. ![]() There is harmony as well as contrast, and a satisfying arc is formed from line one’s spring blossoms to the final hope of Heaven’s largesse. Herrick’s art here lies in the trimness of his selection (there were 1,400 poems, after all, in the original collection) and in its ordering, allowing various configurations of the list-as-narrative. In a fine essay on the Poetry Foundation website, the author observes that “Hesperides is the only major collection of poetry in English to open with a versified table of contents.” I wonder if this is still the case, and would be interested to hear of any contemporary contenders setting out their poetic wares in this way, with or without rhyme and metre. Argument signifies “theme” or “contents” and is not a defence. It’s the opening poem of Herrick’s only collection, Hesperides, and summarises some of its topics. This week, that “Argument” takes the starring role as Poem of the Week, a little hock-cart of sunlit harvest to set us up for the autumn days. In May 2009, my blogpost about Robert Herrick’s poem To His Mistress, Objecting to his Neither Toying or Talking included, by way of introduction, four lines from The Argument of His Book. ![]() 8/27/2023 0 Comments Islanders lightning![]() ![]() The Lightning are a resilient team with a championship pedigree. ![]() A couple mistakes by Tampa Bay cost them in Game 6, and the Cup champs sat back too much in third period. There is an enchanting chemistry between God and the devotee, but there is no conflict. When Ramadasu finally dares the Lord singing "evadabba sommani kulukuthu tirigevu ramachandra", you marvel at the enigmatic silence of God that doesn't mind his dying devotee. Hathiram Bhavaji's story, despite being heavily fictionalized, doesn't have much dramatic appeal. And Nagarjuna doesn't disappoint this time either.īut there is only so much that a performance can shoulder when the drama is crippled. In all the earlier films (barring Shirdi Sai, in which he plays the saint instead of devotee), his momentary separation from the Almighty and his eventual suffering never simply stood as a show of his prowess but also evoked a deep empathy in the viewers. Nagarjuna's tearful eyes have their own way of portraying boundless adulation and borderline-destructive obsession towards his beloved God. But be it the evergreen Annamayya or the almost equally good Sri Ramadasu, what outshined all this desperate glamourization and blatant exaggeration is how consistently excellently Nagarjuna fleshed out his performances every time. A slightly revisionist take of devotee dramas that are very conscious and cautious of the commercial appeal and narrative tautness needed, to the extent that they never shied away from comedy tracks, cleavages and the timeless fruits-on-the-navel routine. Music and songs by MM Keeravani take us back to that era, especially the song Kaliyuga Vaikuntapuri. The Nagarjuna - Raghavendra Rao devotional films have become a genre unto themselves. The portions between Nagarjuna and Saurabh play out pretty well. In Om Namo Venkatesaya, we have Saurabh Raj essaying Vishnu and it's safe to say that we finally have a replacement to fill in NTR's shoes. Just like each time when someone says "Krishna", we're inevitably reminded of late superstar NT Rama Rao, who will forever be remembered for playing the eponymous character. His portrayal of Rama does justification to the iconic character. Nagarjuna, who has given some memorable performances in films like Ramadasu and Annamayya, returns to his forte. For instance, those who pay a considerable amount to the temple authorities, get their darshan done in a matter of a few minutes, while others wait for hours. The rest of Om Namo Venkatesaya narrates several incidents that made Rama transform into Hathiram Bhavaji, who, we believe, has his own Mutt in Tirumala.ĭespite a generic story, the film hits the bull's eye when it talks about Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam's (TTD) hypocrisy that it has continued with for years now. Rama gets the privilege of becoming the administrator of Tirumala, who is also responsible for the induction of the famous Tirumala prasad and Nitya Kalyanam. And that's when Venkatesa (Saurabh Raj Jain) descends on the earth, only to play dice with Rama, his favourite bhakt. Though the duo educates people in their village with short stories of Venkatesa, Rama's quest to meet the lord remains unanswered. In Tirumala, Rama gets acquainted with a fellow devotee, Krishnamma (Anushka Shetty). When Rama gets to know from his preceptor that it was Vishnu himself, he sets on a pilgrimage to Tirumala, to worship Venkatesa. Struck by Rama's spirituality, Lord Vishnu disguises himself as a boy and interrupts his rites. Cut to present, we see a teenage Rama performing rituals in a forest.
